Code of Ethics for Hawaiian Patriots Adopted by Ka ʻAhahui Hawaiʻi Aloha ʻĀina - Hawaiian Patriotic League on 1/14/2017
Ka ʻAhahui Hawaiʻi Aloha ʻĀina (Hawaiian Patriotic League) approves and supports this Code of Ethics for Hawaiian Patriots on behalf of the entire ʻAhahui. Members of the League recognize the supreme importance of “a compact union of all the People who love the Country, and its independence irrespective of Party or creed.” We regard as essential to this legacy the protection of freedom of assembly and the guarantee of equal rights for all Hawaiian patriots, both subjects and denizens, through the use of parliamentary law. As guardians of parliamentary procedure, we play a vital role in the preservation of a democratic lāhui Aloha ʻĀina. A consequent kuleana is to maintain the highest standards of ethical conduct. Therefore, we must find within our own conscience the touchstone by which our actions should rise above these established minimum standards.
1. Nā Kūlana Lāhui - Universal Standards for Hawaiian Patriots*
A Hawaiian patriot shall: 1.1 Assist in restoring Hawaiian national identity. 1.2 Assist in affirming the continuity of Hawaiian independence. 1.3 Maintain high ethical standards and embrace the virtue of a deliberative assembly. 1.4 Promote a spirit of cooperation, mutual respect, and fair dealing with compatriots. 1.5 Conduct oneself so as to reflect credit on the Lāhui and inspire the confidence, respect, and trust of allies and the public. 1.6 Encourage non-discriminatory standards in all aspects of patriotic engagement.
* Section 1 articulates the "ideals" toward which all Hawaiian patriots aspire. They are not intended to be subject to discipline.
2. Nā Kūlana ʻAhahui - Ethical Standards within the League
A Hawaiian patriot shall: 2.1 Refrain from misrepresentation or other conduct that may reflect adversely on the League. 2.2 Refrain from making untrue comments about the work, knowledge, fitness, or other qualifying aspect of a member. 2.3 Immediately report to the Committee on Discipline any known or suspected violation of this code of ethics. When requested, the member shall provide testimony to the committee, and shall assist the committee in the fulfillment of its charge.
3. Nā Kūlana Hālāwai - Ethical Standards Related to Meetings
A Hawaiian patriot shall: 3.1 Understand principles underlying parliamentary law (see RONR (11th ed.), pp. li-lii). 3.2 Assume good faith of other members. 3.3 Adhere to the provisions of the governing documents. 3.4 Adhere to the rules of order prescribed by the adopted parliamentary authority. 3.5 Adhere to decorum in debate (see RONR (11th ed.), pp. 391-394).
4. Nā Kūlana Ma Kahi ʻĒ - Ethical Standards Elsewhere Than in Meetings
A Hawaiian patriot shall: 4.1 Refrain from committing logical fallacies. 4.2 Refrain from allowing debate to become personal. Debate issues, not personalities. 4.3 Refrain from discrediting, disparaging, or disrespecting other members. 4.4 Refrain from sharing an electronic conversation outside the group of members that it is originally addressed to. 4.5 Keep in confidence any information intended for members only. 4.6 Be respectful of members during conversations, whether they are present or absent. 4.7 Not possess a conflict of interest nor expose the organization to undue influence. 4.8 Call to the attention of the Committee on Discipline any deviation from the rules that may be harmful to the organization.
The object of this League shall be to affirm the continuity of Hawaiian independence; to restore Hawaiian national identity; to exert all peaceful and legal efforts to secure for the Hawaiian People and Citizens their Civil Rights; and to ensure that the United States of America complies with international humanitarian law.
