Ka ʻAhahui Hawaiʻi Aloha ʻĀina (KAHAA)

Hui Aloha ʻĀina Continues: The Hawaiian Patriotic League Movement

Ka Ahahui Hawaiʻi Aloha ‘Āina, the Hawaiian Patriotic League, is a grassroots community-driven organization committed to preserving Hawaiian independence and heritage. Reconstituted in 2016, the League was formed to follow in the footsteps of the original Hui Aloha ʻĀina of 1893, the Hawaiian political organization that successfully halted the annexation of Hawaii by the United States through the famous Kūʻē Petitions. Following COVID-19 Pandemic of 2020, KAHAA once again launched Hui Aloha ʻĀina with new members, updated bylaws, a new central body and a new sense of purpose.

MISSION

We affirm the continuity of Hawaiian independence and prepare for the rise of the Hawaiian Kingdom. As po’e aloha aina, let us defend and preserve our lands forever. Ea mai ana ko Hawaii me ke aloha mau i ka aina.

MOTTO

"E Hoʻomau i ke Kūpaʻa no ke Aloha i ka ʻĀina." (Continue to be steadfast in your love for the country) - founder Hon. Iosepa K. Nawahī to the lāhui before his passing on September 14, 1896

MELE ALOHA ʻĀINA

Kaulana Nā Pua was written in 1893 by Ellen Pendergast on behalf of the Royal Hawaiian Band, led by Jose Libornio, who refused to sign the Oath of Allegiance to the occupying government after the overthrow.

ORGANIZATION

KAHAA is a membership organization and our members are a snapshot of our communities. We are teachers, students, union workers, cultural practitioners, farmers, musicians, and healers. We have experienced community organizers and folks learning how to get involved for the first time. Our dynamic, intergenerational membership base reflects the diverse nature of Hawaiʻi, and our organization is structured to center the voices with a vested interest in Hawaiʻi’s future.

To date, four of the 59 original 1893 branches of  Hui Aloha ʻĀina have been restored. Each branch is self-governed with its own leaders, bylaws, and region-specific objectives determined by its members. Branches must align with the League's object and constitution to maintain their charter, enabling the organization to focus on core goals while accommodating regional needs. The League's constitution requires a majority of each branch's membership, including its President and Vice President, to be descendants of Hawaiian subjects, aboriginal or non-aboriginal, alive before January 17, 1893. However, all members, regardless of heritage, can vote within their branches, promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Central Body unifies the League and is composed of regional branch members. Branch presidents automatically become voting members and sit alongside officers who perform key functions of the League. Officers are elected to serve two-year terms by delegate representatives of each branch at the League's annual convention. The current Central Body leadership are wholly comprised of descendants of aboriginal Hawaiian Kingdom subjects and two-thirds women, demonstrating the League's commitment to representation and inclusivity.
